What is Art Therapy?

A common question and a good question. Art Therapy is a psychological approach to improving mental health and wellbeing by incorporating creativity. What does that mean?

There are many methods for using your creativity within an art therapy session, your therapist will have training and often specialisations in particular techniques. Its always good to ask them when starting your sessions.

My approach is client lead, that means what we do in the session and our goals for your art therapy engagement are directed by you in service of your preferences and needs.

“Creativity is not a rare ability. It is not difficult to access. Creativity is a fundamental aspect of being human. It’s our birthright. And it’s for all of us.” Rick Rubin

My approach is informed by social ethics framework, acknowledging inequality within health systems and how these can impact your health journey. Every person has the capacity to create, you may have drawn as a child or noticed how looking at an artwork makes you feel. These sensory experiences help to provide information about ourselves and our values.

To learn more about how these can be accessed to support you, get in contact, we'd love to hear from you.

Thanks for reading,

Sam
