Studio Art Group: Art Exchange

Inspired by public art and intersubjective response techniques the Studio Art Group (SAG) has engaged another artist collective run by NEAMI national to collaborate on the first Art Exchange.

The Art Exchange invited two groups of artists to share their work and respond to one another. Each artist supplied an artwork, the work was then chosen by another artist and an artwork was made in response. The project encouraged communication between strangers through the medium of art. A silent, visual communication, a method to engage with a stranger and observe what connections could be made.

Making an artwork in response to something specific (another artwork, object, person) is a method to combine perceptive, emotional and cognitive skills reflexively. The Art Exchange invites the participating artists to dialogue with another via the image making process, the meaning of the response is co-created, then shared, and is now no longer an isolated activity.

The artists met to view the works they created and provide artwork statements. The statements were only shared at the end of the art making process. The participating artists were curious about the similarities between the pairs (original and response artworks) and had the opportunity to connect with one another about their impressions. Some of the artists chose to gift their response works to the other artist, solidifying the connected and personal nature of genuine exchange - generosity.
