Updated: May 20

Last night we celebrated the opening of the Studio Art Groups' premiere exhibition.

The Studio Art Group (SAG), founded in 2023, was born from an urgent community need for a psycho-social creative arts group. The disability sector has established arts programs for participants with intellectual and physical disability, but it underserves mental health. SAG contributes to fill this gap, supporting artists to develop their practice.

Why is it important to have an arts practice?
Creativity allows exploration of the subconscious, social and environmental factors that contribute to our understanding of self. Making art in a community of peers reduces isolation and increases belonging - key determinants of health and wellbeing (Cacioppo & Patrick 2008). Combing creativity and community, we have witnessed, is a powerful way of improving the lived experience of individuals who live with a variety of psychological concerns.

We hope that this exhibition THRESHOLD will allow the audience to experience the creative products and process of the Studio Art Group program and witness the impact it has had on the artists.

See the exhibition until Sunday 18th of May at School House Studios 28 Victoria st, Coburg and online at www.samanthasederof.com
