Art, Mindfulness, and Anxiety
I’m often asked, “How does art therapy actually work?” Sometimes, words alone can feel too abstract - so I believe it’s often better to show and experience it for yourself.
If you’re curious about what art therapy involves, I’ve designed a short, simple prompt you can try at home using any materials you have on hand.
This mindful art activity can take as little as 10 seconds to help you become present, slow your breathing, and lower your heart rate.
Activity Invitation
Prepare a small space on your table or floor. Grab a piece of paper and a pen - or, if you have them, a brush and some paint.
Start by noticing yourself in the room. Feel the support of the chair or ground beneath you. With your materials in front of you, take a moment to focus on the pen or brush in your hand. When you’re ready, make a mark on the page. Any mark is perfectly fine.
This process isn’t about creating a finished piece of art—it’s about being present in the moment with mindful awareness and focused attention. Let your hand move in whatever way feels good. Make marks, draw shapes, follow lines, observe colours blending. Allow yourself to simply explore.
When you feel ready to stop, pause. Notice how your body feels. Has your breathing changed? Did anything shift while you were engaged in the process?
I’d love to hear what you noticed.
